My collie/sheltie mix is about to turn a year old and has been spayed. The dog is a bottomless pit when it comes to food but never seems to put on any weight. She doesnt have an intestinal problem. Shes just really active. She always moving - Ive been training her in some agility courses to work off her energy, but it doesnt work.

Because she is so active and relatively thin (not bone thin, just scrawnny) I feed her basically however much she will eat. Should I continue to feed her as much as she wants, or will this be bad for her in the long run. I feed her Purina pro plan dry food and Pedigree wet if that helps. Plus sometimes I make her up chicken and rice because she loves it. I just dont want to make her fat or unhealthy when she gets older.

have you had her checked for heartworms? Also, if she is only a year old, she is still growing and as active as you say she is, she probably burns off the calories as fast as she eats. Nothing you are feeding her will hurt her. Maybe you should consider getting another pup (male) for her to play with. Check with the rescues or SPCA in your area. They are pack animals and do best if there is a buddy for them (I am referring to the Sheltie side of her)
Good luck and keep up the good work.

Well my suggestion would be that if she does start to put on a little weight don't free feed her give her a certain amount of food until she slims back down. I don't really see it as a problem alot of people I know with very active dogs do free feed them

WOW a large variety of questions! i'm going to handle the 1st one. And it would help to understand how old he's.:) a million -you are able to could get him checked by the vet. If he has a urinary tract an infection then he won't have the potential to help it and all teh training and proposals in the worldwide won't exchange a factor. 2 -Lose the pee pads. this would be a undeniable fire thank you to CONFUSE your canines because of the fact what they study is that it particularly is okay to pee interior. they do no longer udnerstand that there is something magical concerning the pee pads that makes it ok. 3 - Take him exterior usually so he has the possibility to pee exterior. whilst he does, compliment him in a chuffed voice and perchance even provide him a take care of. in case you are able to take the paper / throw rug / even though that he peed on in the homestead and positioned it the place you decide on him to bypass exterior which will bypass an prolonged way in coaching him to bypass exterior. 4 - do no longer go away him unsupervised in the homestead. save a watch on him in any respect circumstances and in case you notice him sniffing like he's approximately to "bypass" get him exterior. Play with him somewhat too, in any different case he gets the concept that he's being punished for peeing and / or peeing exterior and that it the final factor you decide on. 5 - in no way ever scold him for peeing indoors. in case you do all which will take place is he will decide it particularly is a foul concept so which you are able to work out him peeing and then he won't pee exterior once you bypass on walks. he additionally gets solid at being sneaky approximately peeing indoors so he can ward off the punishment. 6 - wait and notice. Now that he has the undesirable habit, changing it won't take place in one day. canines do no longer all of sudden "get it" and then act suited. rather what is going to take place is that there will be fewer and much less injuries and he gets it impressive further and added usually until eventually ultimately he would be housebroken. it could take approximately 2 months. wait and notice and consistent and robust luck!

if you notice as she ages she begins to put on weight thats ok. just cut her food back a little. i would recomend talking to you vet or visiting a petsmart or petco and finding a high performance/high calorie brand of dog food. at this point her metabolism is high and being a sporting dog she's burning off a lot anyways, i think at this point she may just need more calories. this is of course after you've had a stool sample looked at by your vet to make sure she does not have any intestinal parasites.

She is just young and active. She will probably grow out of it after she hits the 2 year mark. If you are really, terribly, concerned go have her checked. I really believe that she is just using her food for energy at this age, and by what you have said. She will probably be just fine. Good for you for being attentive to her. Good luck. Nana

Keep feeding her what she will eat until she starts outting on weight. She's just a growing pup right now, she's going to eat a lot until she's full grown. Be careful to stop feeding her so much when she does start to get fatter, you don't want her to get overwieght.
