Legally, in the US and Canada "light" as a brand label modifier must refer to calories, and compared either to a norm or to the brand's regular beer, but most of them also taste less malty and hoppy, almost like water to me (but then so does regular Budweiser and Miller). There have been some with more taste, however: Beck's would be one. The original Lightship from Sam Adams had considerable flavor.

Reduction in alcohol is one way, but just one, to cut down calories.

Carbs, calories, and to some extent, alcohol. They taste very bad- I'd much rather drink 1 normal beer than 2 light ones. You do not get as drunk, and it tastes way better.

it's a type of beer with, generally, less alcohol and fewer carbohydrates than regular beer, and, therefore, it contains fewer calories. Hence beer brand like michalob (cant spell...) try to sell it as "healthier" beer.

It's not light because of weight.

Lower in sugar, tend to have same alcohol content - well, bulmers light and coors light do.
