I bought asparagus the weekend before last. It's been in my fridge and it smells fine, it's not at all slimy, it's still green. I don't know if there's any special circumstances when it comes to this veggie...can it sour or make us sick? How old is too old?

If the bottom end of the asparagus breaks off easily when you snap it, it should be fine. If it bends in a rubbery sort of way, it's past it's prime. While it likely won't make you sick unless it's already slimey, it probably will not taste very good...quite bitter... once it gets to the rubbery stage. Depending on how fresh it was when you bought it, it could easily last several weeks in the refrigerator. Hope this helps.

Asparagus shrivels up when it gets old. The tops of the stalk also tend to yellow. If this hasn't happened, trim 1/2" off the base of the stalks and put them in water to freshen them up.

If it has gone soft and sort of wilty it has lost a lot of freshness and won't be that great but asparagus is generally a good keeper so if it is still firm it will be good.

Bend it and if it snaps eat it. If it bends it is no good! Enjoy!
