Jack Russell, 6 years old. She broke right back leg 1 year ago, vet put pin in (a couple times because it would come out of place) and then removed it after she healed. She favored it but would use it most of the time to walk (awkwardly since it bowed in a little) but stopped playing as much & gained alot of weight (she went from 12 pounds to about 25 - have her on weight control food now).

A year later she was limping on same leg when I came home, same vet did a physical and said it was a sprain (no xray) said it would take time to heal. It's been 2 months and there has been no improvement. She will tip-toe touch the ground for balance every once in a while, but I would say 95% of the time she is holding it up & not using it. She doesn't wince or anything if you touch it or move it, but now struggles to jump on to couch or bed & will often miss and fall down.

I will get xray this week, but if it says it's not broken, what can I do? I just want my baby to be better

Take her to the vet and have him x-ray it. It sounds like the leg didn't heal properly and the surgery may not have been done properly. If you get no satisfaction from the vet, take her to another one. Keep trying to have her loose weight. That is way too much for a JR to weigh. If he can't or won't do anything, then seek another opinion.
Good luck.

Soft tissue (muscle & ligament & tendon) damage can be as bad and even slower healing than a bone break. THis might or might not have any relation to the bone break. Ask your vet for a referal to a vet physical therapist or a sports injury orthopod.

The easiest thing to do is put ice on it for about 20 min. twice a day, try to do it when she's calm or sleepy. If she is putting on weight, just feed her a little less, and make sure she gets as much exercise as she feels comfortable with.

After reading your entire question, I think your pooch has probably gotten used to not walking on it, or is psychologically remembering how painful it was to walk on it. The muscles may be weak too and perhaps with the extra weight gain, your pooch's leg is strained.

Good luck.

awwww i feel so bad i have a min pin and he limps to try putting hot water on it and make sure he or she doesn't jump off or on to anything high also you may want to try put muscle rub on his leg and try to keep him or her out of cold weather it could even be athirst so until you get him or her into the vet give the dog one aspirin to ease the pain when it get really bad hope it helps!!!

Your best bet is ask the vet while you're there. If it's not broke then the vet can give you options to do to help it heal.
Good luck!

if it isn't broken, ask if she'll wrap it anyway.. when it comes off the dog will most likely realise its gone, and try walking on the leg again. also, make sure to give her praise and treats when she walks normal. the problem will go alway, i'm sure. =)
