this is the great testimony to the divinity and humanity of Jesus and was as much for the Apostles sake as any thing else.
Moses represented the old law that Jesus was going to complete and Elijah represented the Prophets who spoke of the coming of the Messiah and now Jesus had come, and so this vision was the summation of all that had been revealed to the Israelites.
But as Jesus allowed Peter,James and John to be present, it also affirmed to them that Jesus was God made man .

The Transfiguration was to show the select disciples Christ's glory and divine nature, to dispell any doubt they might have.
