Unless you are a super healthy mom who gives her children proper nutrition children and adults should get some vitamins. Not high doses, just a little supplement. There are some great ones out there such as Yummy greens that replace the veggies kids don't get enough of. The reason it is debatable is because too much of certain vitamins may be bad for you, or some vitamins contain things like food dyes and yeast that are not good for you. Choose carefully.

Yes -- the logical answer that you stated in the question is the right one. I started my children on multi-vitamins as soon as they started solid foods at around six months. Up until then, I breastfed only and they received their vitamins through my breastmilk. Once they started solids and relied less on breastmilk, its important to supplement with vitamins. Your local health food store should have some great organic, chemical-free drops to put in their juice/milk or for an older child, they even make organic, dye-free, chemical-free gummi bear chewables for children.

Well, my son is 2 and he takes vitamins, and so far since he has taken his vitamins he hasn't had a cold for a yr. Plus, from the hospital they give vitamins for the baby until he or she is 1

Yes, only if the child doesn't eat enough fruits and vegetables.
Otherwise, a child who eats a very well balance diet with plenty
veggies and fruits probably won't need a lot vitamins. Every once in while is good, they need some fortified, proteins and lots of calcium for their growing bones, tissue and teeth.

Depends on the type of vitamins. It's not a good idea to give young children vitamins containing iron cause they could overdose. Check with your pediatrician for more info.

Depends if they are lacking vitamins becasue they do not eat the foods they should or have a medical condition such as lactose intolerant can be given chewable calcium supplements.

That's a good question for your doctor.
If I were you I would draw up typical meals that you give your child, average daily intakes and the like, and take it to your doctor. Explain your nutritional concerns. They should be able to help.
