Yes. It depends on the charge and your location. Go to a search engine and type in the name of your state, then 'state judiciary home page' and hit 'search'. It should pull up the home page with the laws for your state. You can look at the laws regarding abuse, sentencing, etc. If someone is being abused, you need to talk to them and help them find the strength to leave themselves. Otherwise they'll just go back because that's what they know, that's what's safe. I've been there. Be there for them. Talk to them. There are also restraining orders, which can be taken out at your local court house. They're very cheap and affordable. The police are also more than happy to put a trespassing warrant on your property for you, so if somebody walks onto your lawn, you can simply phone and have them removed without dirtying your hands. Good luck.

Yes you can go to jail for domestic violence. For how long is not easy to say some in cases just a matter of hours, and in others years. It normally depends on the severity of the attack, the extenuating circumstances, and the probability of the offender re offending. My first suggestion is to contact a domestic violence support group and they can advise you on how to continue with helping the person being abused. You can also contact the domestic violence division of you police department and request to stay anonymous. The most important thing is that you REPORT IT now. Get some kind of investigations going A.S.A.P. You have a duty to the person you know is being abused and a duty to your self as a fellow human-being to take a stand against abuse no matter how mild or server. Abuse is abuse verbal abuse is just as bad if not worse in some cases than physical abuse. Remember in most cases the person being abused either doesn't have the ability or chance to save them selves. And they need some one to be their voice, strength, courage, and helping hand. Do the right thing and report it to someone nobody deserves to be abused. In the end more than the one person being abused ends up hurt and scared. More people need to stand up to Stop the Violence. Good luck I hope you are this persons voice and you make a difference to this person. Who knows maybe your the one who saves their life.

It depends if the abuse is purely verbal, or physical, or both. How long in jail depends on the severity, and if there is any prior history. The most important thing is that no matter what, no one should have to endure an abusive situation. The best way to help is to start by typing “abuse hotline” right here in the Yahoo search engine, and go to one of those sites to start the help process. They know how to deal with these situations without making matters worse.

You don't go to jail for verbal abuse.
And you only go to jail for physical abuse if there are visible marks from the abuse. So, the physical violence report has to be made asap after the event. If the abuser is not present when the police show up, and claims not to be responsible...it's very likely nothing will happen. If there is no proof, they will not take your word for it. It's highly unlikely that anyone will ever be jailed for past abuse.
If abuse physical abuse occurs and a report is made in a timely manner, the abuser will most likely be out on bail within 24 hours.

For physical abuse, yes. The amount of jail time can vary depending on a lot of things including the extent of the injuries, the skill of the attorney, the judge, etc.
A third person cannot do much if the person being abused is an adult. That person must choose to press charges.

It depends on the nature of the abuse. If it is verbal threats, that is assault and can be a criminal offense. If the abuse is physical and causes injuries, that can be battery, also a possible criminal offense.
Contact the chief of police at the local police department. If you cannot get him interested, contact the county District Attorney.
A person guilty of assault and/or battery can get jail time, but it depends on the severity of the attacks. Maybe 30 days in the county jail.

Stay out of it. If you know the person who is being abused, support them and encourage them to move out - but otherwise, don't get involved. Abusive relationships are often co-dependent, and more than one do-gooder has ended up being beaten by BOTH parties for interfering.
Abuse is of course against the law, but the person being abused would need to make the abuse report in most states. If you report it, the police will likely visit, warn them both, and then leave - and they'll probably figure out it was you that filed the report.

In the UK (not sure if you are UK or USA) you can go to jail for 6 months if physical abuse causes no injuries, if it does cause injuries you can go to jail for anything up to 7 years (depending on the amount of injuries caused, and intention). Also, but probably not relevant to you, if someone causes very serious harm (such as paralaysis) with intention there is a maximum sentence of life in prison.
In the UK, you can go to jail for 6 months if veral abuse causes a person to fear harm. If the abuse causes a mental condition, such as depression, you can go to jail for 7 years (since it is ABH)
You should make a tip off to the police, and they will not be entitled to tell the abuser who tipped them off, even if it goes yo court you can request a screen should you be called as a witness.
Hope this helps

Abused physically=yes
Abused verbally= It depends on how severely you were abused by words. You can't go to jail for calling someone a string of obscenities but if you threatened their life, it's possible.
