Poms and most toy breeds are just yippy dogs, even the best behaved ones. You didn't specify when or how much barking it does. Is it letting you know someone is at the door? Barking to go out? Barking to let you know it wants to play?

Barking is how a dog communicates to you. I have a chi that can really get on the nerves. She loves to get all the rest going and then she hits the recliner and watches the fun.

Poms have a tremendous amount of nervous energy and maybe it needs to be out running and playing more. Obviously, barking gets your attention, maybe negative attention. And they are so cute and little, blah, blah. Barking for the sake of barking is not what you want so time to nip it in the bud.

Some do respond to a spritz of water(just water!!). I do not and have not ever used a bark collar, etc. We do not use any of the items suggested here. I have used a combination of "time out" in a decent size crate with something to play with. Cover the crate so Pom can't see anything to bark at. Dog is barking for no reason, scoop it up, use firm low tone(not yelling) to tell dog it is fine, no need to bark and into your crate you go. You go do whatever for at least 15-20 minutes and ignore it.

Out of crate, some attention and down to play. Go do whatever you need. When the barking is just barking for no real need or reason repeat the steps. When you and Pom are interacting and it isn't barking a storm be sure to praise and give attention.

They are like little kids doing all they can to get any kind of attention, bad or good. Have to reteach the Pom that it will get good attention when behaving and NO attention when not. He is feeding off your reaction, he barks and you react. We all tend to baby and pamper and spoil the cute little pup and the adorable little breed, then they become a little monster. Maybe you carried it around with you too much or gave into its every demand.

Other dogs it can go play with? I firmly believe dogs are the healthiest when they can play with other dogs and use all the pent up energy. Try to find another owner of a Pom/toy breed to arrange "play dates". That can make a lot of difference and keeps it socialized and doing what dogs are supposed to do.

Keep up the firm "no nonsense" tone and attitude. My chi learned early on that I do not allow her to do whatever even though she is a cute little thing, especially bite at ankles! You have to let them know what is expected and allowed. Believe me, dogs are smarter than we give them credit for. Check out the Dog Whisperer, Cesar Milano. His shows deal a lot with your type problem. Good luck

I have an American Eskimo dog and he barks a lot too! We do find a squirt gun or bottle to be effective when we want him quiet. Just a squirt or two does the trick but not right into the face. Also a stare down sometimes works. He barks a lot when I have been gone for along time and return. I ignore him until he stops barking and jumping. Very effective.

I wouldn't suggest muzzling it all the time. how will it eat and drink? Besides, dogs are completely capable of making just as much noise with a muzzle.

maybe find out why it's barking and try to correct the problem, not just the symptom. Maybe your dog needs more exercise. A tired dog isn't going to bark too much.

I use a squirt bottle filled with water or vinegar water on my Bichon. There are also "no bark" collars that will automatically spray a citronella mix by the pup's head when they bark. I have heard from friends that those can be quite helpful in teaching a pom proper "indoor voices"
Good luck- dd
