I just read in an American newspaper (I am not American) that a year ago a New Hampshire university professor published research that found that 82% of teen-age girls 13 to 15 who met and hooked up with men over 30 years they found on the net knew exactly what they were doing and wanted to do it. So when Yahoo has a question about young girls with older men why are the men so often called perverts and predators when there is so much mutual consent? Is this more of an American thing? I have noticed most of such answers seem to be (when it can be inferred or deduced) from Americans. Might this because the American consent age is 2 or more years higher than it is in most other countries (including mine)? Why do Americans have so much trouble dealing with realities of teen age sexual behaviours?

I personally do not see the big fuss over younger girls and older men. However there are alot of men,who are predators, online who target willing girls. Teenage girls have turned into computer bots, offering sex to the willing. However, just because a girl is willing doesn't mean a grown person, who has the ability to think and reason more then a child who doesn't have the right to consent, should do something, which can get him in trouble. The age in most states are 16,and in few 18.
There are many relationships that work out with older men and younger (teenage) girls,Americans in general ignore the fact that each generation is becoming more sexually charged and therfore society labels you pirmiscuous, and or a pedophile,if you are willing to give in to your sexual charge. I commend other countries and their laws at times, because they are more open minded to sexuality.
Why wouldn't the other 18% realize what they are doing,if they meet people they talk to on the internet?

Personally I think it is a control issue. Before America was formed, marriage between men of royalty and girls as young as 12 was not too uncommon in Europe. The people in power were free to have any girl they wanted. The royalty arranged marriages, even against their daughters' will, because they wanted to control who came to power after them (in the event the daughter's husband would assume power) and who would inherit their land, and also to maintain relations with other people of nobility, and furthermore, to ensure that their genes were passed on and mixed with other people of noble blood. Now that marriages aren't arranged like this anymore, men still want a way to control their own daughters sexuality, so collectively, men have decided it is wrong for girls less than 16 (in most states) to go with older men. That is my theory at least. However, I do believe that most girls 12-16 are rather clueless and aren't in a good position to make their own decisions regarding sex and marriage, even if they think they can, so the law makes sense to protect them. As far as rape, I believe it is equally wrong to rape any woman of any age, but there are men who rape specifically women under 16 so the law makes the penalty harsher for those who do this to these more vulnerable girls. Why the age is lower in other countries, I don't know, but their societies apparently decided on a lower number that was socially acceptable than ours.

I think young girls like to think they can do anything they want. That they are invincible, and unbreakable. Getting involved with an older guy seems like a way of proving how "grown up" they are. If the girls go to meet the guy, they know what they are getting into... its just unfortunate these guys let it happen and want it to happen. If the young girl goes to meet the guy, she is just as stupid as he is.

However in saying that, there are some good guys out there. Its just a few that ruin it for the rest

because....here in America, i dont know about your country, hooking up with older guys a lot of the time leads to rape, abuse, unwanted pregnancy etc. Even if the young girls decide to go with the men, they dont realize that the man has more experience and more maturity then she does and she could be getting herself into a lot of trouble.

yes Internet relationships are dangerous and because of the limits we set some children usually ones with no discipline ignore those limits and do as they please. but minors being sexually active with males 18 or older is against the law. the law is meant to protect and when those laws are disobeyed it is harder to protect. grow up little girl and post better questions.

that much of an age difference is to much. if young girls want to learn about them selves they should stay close to their mental and physical age range. or they could get very hurt playing adult games
