I was a Nam era vet who retired after Desert Storm, I worked with draftees, and I honestly believe that the military is better off without them. Would you want your son or daughter, or your country, to depend on people who care nothing about any of them? Draftees tend to do the bare minimum to get by, they don't care about their fellow troops or the mission, it's the volunteers, the true patriots, who get the job done.

Interesting read,,,, as an older vet myself, and finding myself unemployed I'ld love to be able to serve again. But my skills, fixing MRI and CT scanners wouldn't be valuable in the military. I did get an offer a few years back to,,,,,,,don't want to put anybody in jeopardy,,,,,, but I turned it down at the time. The military don't want us though, and neither does the private work force. At fifty I'm told its the new 40, I have 20 years until I can draw my Social Security,,,, it just does make much sense. Thank God for old ladies though. No more of that head game stuff the younger folk go thru, you know the ones who still don't understand gravity, and that everyman needs a shed to protect his tools. On the serious side those, my income in the private sector is worth 100,000 to 150,000 a year, but I'ld gladly do if as a member of the armed services, but reality, I'ld have to leave any actual combat to the younger folk, I may get up at 5 but I usually go to bed by 10, and I still think about sex every 10 seconds, and I do need 4-6 hours off at a time everynow and then,,, did I say thank God for old ladies.

i would not support a military draft... My question to this guy is...Why would you want a draft in the 1st place. If you draft everyone thats not in the military, your going to have one nasty military force. Becuase those people dont want to be there. You take them out of their home and force them into something thats not what they want. Makes no sense, even if it is just a game to get the president NOT to go to war, thats the wrong game to play. Becuase i honestly dont think it would stop a president from sending them. In countries like Turkey... they are required to serve for 2 years. My thought on this is that if you are drafted into a war, you will fight for your life, or cower for you life caring for themselves and not for their squad. Now about the border patrol with Mexico we currently have troops on the border but they are unarmed which is just GREAT! I don't think we need a draft for the border patrol of Mexico because it is not as hard or terrifying a job as it would be if you were going overseas to fight someone who wants to kill you. We do not currently have a problem with illegal immigrants coming from Canada and if we did we don't care because they actually speak English...

I remember the draft during the Vietnam War. What a mess. It seems to me that Israel has the right idea. All 18 year olds, male and female, must give two years service to the government. It's fair and across-the-board. No fiddling with deferments, nepotism, National Guard opt-outs or other complications. Keep in mind our President.

a draft is not something you can plunge into if their is danger of serious war (not Iraq) not to say the war in iraq isn't huge but we don't need our entire military in Iraq
A border draft ? we could easily deploy national guard into Mexico
We have plenty of troops on hand

i think a military draft would be great! i am going to enlist this year and almost all of the people i go to school with are more concerned about smoking pot than the war we are fighting.if their was a draft it would make some use out of these people

Hmm. What I always wanted, to send pregnant mom's back to mexico in handcuffs. To beat Jose for the fifth time because he hopped the border, and to be spit on by the growing mexican population. No thanks, thats your boat sir.
