If you are in the UK -
If she is signed off by her doctor and has a sick note, then she can apply for Incapactiy benefit and Disability Living Allowance. She may also be able to claim Carers Allowance and certain tax credits - but this is dependant on circumstances. I am currently applying for IB and DLA and it is a hard slog to get mental illness recognised, but you can do it. You can apply of IB and DLA online using the links below, and you should speak to the Citizens Advice Bureau or your local Jobcentre for advice on other things she might be able to claim.
If you want any more advice, feel free to PM me :)

You need to go to your local Social Security office, but I believe you have to have five emotional disorders to qualify for SSI. You'll want to check into that. There are often links from your state Division of Family Services office website. If you just need the money to afford the medication, they can assist with that, too. They'll let you know what your options are. You can find phone numbers in the blue government pages in the front of the phone book.

If she has been proven by a Dr. that it is unsafe for her to have a job, then have him document this info and have your wife make an appointment with your local Social Security office. They will tell her what paperwork she needs to bring. However, many people in this world suffer from this same disorder and under proper supervisoin and medication from a Dr. they are able to lead pretty normal lives. This includes having and keeping a job.

First off I want to say It's really great you support your wife through all of this. I have a family member that has this and they recieve SSI you can apply online or go to your local county health building. You can also call your local health buildng and ask fo economic support, they can answer any Q's you have. As for all the people that think they should talk down about these people if you don't have it don't talk. This can be very difficult working with people everyday. A lot of people clash personality wise in a job setting. I wish you both the best of luck.

You should qualify for certain amounts of income assistance from the government. I fail to see how having a mental illness makes you a government leech. It is nobody's fault and it is a disability. Try getting letters from your doctor and a psychiatrist to confirm that you have the disorder. You should go down to the local Mental Health association and check online for resources. Social Services, I think it's called ADFC in the States, can inform you about various grants including grants for housing, education and income assistance. Good luck and I hope you are feeling okay.

Get in line at social security with the rest of the leechs.
Or go out get a job and become a contributing member of society.
Everyone gets blue, set goals big and small so you always feel like you are making progress, you will feel a lot better in the long run then sitting around medicated feeling sorry for yourself collecting a few hundred a month.

Asking for disability does not make u a leech!! Disability is something youre entitled to if you have a work history of 10 yrs or more! Your wife contributed to her social security disability benifits when she paid taxes everry year she worked. Its not a hand out! SSD and SSI are different!
I must warn you though that its not easy to get aproved for mental illness. Your wife should be seeing a doctor on a regular basis to prove to SS that she is seeking help and is trying to get better. The doctor also has to agree she is too ill to work.
It took me 2 years to get approved, I was denied the first time. I have been in therapy for 4 yrs, have been hospitalized, and am on meds, all of this helped me get approved the second time.. She is also going to have to convince the SSD doctor.
email me if you have more questions!

Why specifically can she not work? Usually this sort of thing can be controlled through medication. If she has never worked before then I don't think there is much she is entitled to. You should check with the doctor who diagnosed her as having this disorder to see what her limits would be. I am sorry to sound mean in my answer, but I know people who have this disorder also that are productive citizens and earn their living, not expect one to be handed to them.

Are you in the United States? If so, and if your wife worked in the past, and earned wages, she may be eligible for Social Security disability.
If she never worked and is unable to work, the next option is Welfare. If you are working and earning a wage, she may not qualify. You would have to contact your state public assistance office.
