I don't know about toothpaste, but aloe vera sure does.
Don't believe everything you see in the movies. In My Big Fat Greek Wedding they claimed Windex eliminates zits.

The safest way to initally alleviate pain from a minor burn is to run cold water over it for 10-15 minutes. Applying substances that coat the skin can keep the burn going. Ibuprofen or acteminophen can be taken for continued pain relief. Later if you wish to use aloe vera to promote healing that is appropriate.

Break off a piece of your aloe vera plant and immediately put on your burn. It will not only relieve the burn but will prevent blistering and possible scar. If you don't have an aloe vera plant, get one, no home should be without one. They are also good for insect bites, wasp stings and poison ivy.

Keep the air off a fresh burn. Holding under cold water helps stop the burning process. Do it until it stops hurting and you will save yourself a lot of grief.
Good Luck

My grandmother always had me mix water and baking powder into a paste and put in a burn. So if you're ever in the kitchen and burn yourself cooking put a little baking powder on it.

I've never heard of that before, but you NEVER put ice on a burn... it makes it blister and scar. cold water is normally what you would put on a burn.
