One example I have seen is a Nintendo Wii advert which involved a couple of spoken words in a voiceover but otherwise absolutely no sound. Do you think this is effective? And can you name any other adverts that use a similar technique?

i guess it's a bit like teaching - in order to get a class full of kids to calm down you have more success whispering than shouting because it is different - this translates into the advert world by being a break from the over-stimulation that we are bombarded with day in day out - interesting question ty

Using silence as part of an ad is extremely effective IMO. When the sound wall-paper stops.....it's heads up. Has the tv gone wrong?

There was also the subliminal stuff that politicians used before it got stopped. A secondary flash of a name. Barry Goldwater got stuffed for it, but this was way back in the 60s.

music isn't a motivating element, besides the undeniable fact that, it does help with variety acceptance. music serves as an additive to help strengthen the effects of the seen classified ads. It's the equivalent of negative space in print. I've done very effective TV that required no more than 5 seconds of announcer copy. I've even done utterly silent TV spots. Typically, people wonder what's goiing on when they don't hear the usually jabber and noise of the standard TV spot.

However, silence really doesn't work well in radio. I wouldn't recommend it at all.

It is often said that "actions speak louder than words", and I believe this to be true. I particularly think that "silent advertising" would be perfect for political campaign ads! : )

How effective is the use of words to communicate....depends on how it's used. You'er not gaining any knowldege wth your quston.
