con is a reserved device name from the days of dos - as are aux, prn, nul, com1, com2+, lpt1, and many others.

they're pretty much redundant in 2006, but they are still built into the operating system and you cannot create folders with those names in windows to avoid conflicts.

con is the device name for console.

It is a reserved device name - abbreviation of console I think. You would have the same problem if you tried to name it COM1, COM2, LPT1, etc.
