DON'T! Fighting is important part of children's communication.
The only thing you have to pay attention is that your child is not aggressive. If he fights once in a while, you don't have to worry. If it is all the time, try to find the reason inside your home, children imitate grown ups and understand more than you think. If there is aggression in the house, even if it is not physical, than hard argues and aggressive words, it influences the child badly.
And television, of course. It is one of main sources of aggression in the modern times.

Whatever you do...do NOT spank him in response for hitting...kinda sends some mixed signals...BAD BOY Spank...don't hit....yeah...not gonna work. sit down with him and tell him it's wrong...use time out...take him away from the kids until he gets along. do not talk down to him, he needs to understand as you and I do that hitting is wrong. Reward for good interactions with other kids wiht more play time, a piece of favorite fruit, or a hug.
