By newcomer, I assume you have married into a family situation. What kind of efforts have you made to become a new member of the family. It is as much up to you to make an effort as it is the family. I had to prove myself to my mother-in-law. She had five son's, no daughter's and when she died at the age of 95, she was still thinking that no woman was good enough for her son's. I did everything I could do for her so I was the one who was slightly ok, but still not good enough. Time will tell. I really can't say what their reasons are. It's something you have to live with to keep peace.

1. Someone who si new to a family doesn't have their role yet. There are peacekeepers, pot stirers, quiet ones, loud ones, friendly and aloof people for every family. Give your family time to learn his/her personality and the role will naturally present itself.
2, New family members means a new set of family. There are little clusters of family if you've looked at the way a family tree is broken down it will make more since. There is now the possibiltiy that the family will have another little family to nurture if the couple has kids.
3. Just uncertainty. In my family my cousins new wife barely spends time with any of us. TO the point where we think she doesn't really like us and that makes it really uncomfortable.

Cultural/religious issues.
Physical appearance ( family might be conservative and newcomer is loud or a gansta-looking type or visa-versa)
Overprotective/trust issues (family attitude might be " he's not good enough for our child"...).
