What wins a Dog show? This is my only experience...

Once I went to a dog show with my Aunt, who is a chihuahua breeder. She had brought along a dog I liked because I liked her, and entered her because I said "she's the best puppy ever! She'll win!" (This by the way, is the only chihuahua I've ever loved, and occurred about 22 years ago.)

The first run she was very surprised that "Angel" beat out "Chico", her CDX (I guess that some big championship thing). Chico was her best, and he was going for another championship... only to be beat out by 2 rank amatures. We took it up to best in breed, and won that too. After we took best in toy group, my Aunt insisted on taking over for the "Best in Show" run. They lost.

The judge *did* know my Aunt, but didn't realize Angel was hers. He pulled her aside after the show, and told her the reason he'd placed us above everyone else was the obvious love between us... it was obvious that *I* didn't know what I was doing, but Angel did

did everything right, when *I* handled her. She did it for me and refused to do it for my Aunt. When my Aunt took her into the ring, she behaved as she had expected she would from the start, frightened of everything... and she all but dashed to me at the end.

He hadn't judged the "best in show" but he said Angel would have had a fair shot at it had *I* done the run instead of my Aunt. That it was rare to see such *love* between a show dog and her handler. And that love wins championships.

What do you think wins shows?

No, my experience was a regular showing. Chico was into regular shows *and* obedience.

This particular show was in Vancouver, Canada. I think Chico was an American Champ... Hard to recall, like I said its been 22 years

The "BEST" dog on that day!!

"Showmanship" is a big part of it-"wonderdawg" won't go up if he's dragging as*.

Handling should be "invisible";the handler simply presenting the anmal to it's best advantage & staying outta the way. Knowing the judge hasn't anything to do w/anything either.

Btw,a CDX has NOTHING to do w/CONFORMATION!!! It's an OBEDIENCE title!

CDX is an obedience title not a conformation title.
To win a dog needs to , in the opinion of the judge at that time, have the best conformation and be the closest to breed standard out of the other dogs it is showing against...if all else is equal a judge will look for show "attitude" ,a dog that wants to win that has that look at me attitude...Dogs only win one championship unless they are being shown under a different registry...if a dog has an AKC Championship it can compete in UKC and earn a championship or it can compete in CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) to earn a championship there too. It can also compete for international championship. In addition to a Conformation championship a dog can compete and earn an obedience trial championship.

In a Conformation Ring, the dog that fits the standard the BEST wins the best of Breed. Best of breeds go up against each other for BEST of show. The best dog of all the best of breeds will win. Judges are impartial. CDX is an Obedience title and has nothing to do with Conformation showing. Sounds like you have dog shows confused with Obedience trials. In Obedience trials, the dog that gets the most points by making the least mistakes, usually wins.

At a dog show the dog is being judged on how closely they meet the breed standard aka the ideal for that breed. The dog which comes closest wins.

That being said, if two dogs are equal, the dog that "shows" the best wins. A dog that is happy and outgoing and shines will win over another dog that is shy---unless the breed is supposed to be very reserved.

As for a dog with a CDX---that is an AKC obedience title and has nothing to do with conformation showing. It stands for Companion Dog Excellent.

Know your judge and know how to show the judge what they are looking for. As far as handlers,, don't be afraid to hand your dog off to someone else, sometimes a judge will like the way a certain person presents a dog. If everyone else is down on their knees stacking their dog, stand and free stack yours, don't be afraid to be a little different. You are trying to make your dog stand out in the crowd, so make it stand out!!

A happy, well-bred dog. If Angel is more comfortable with you handling, maybe, for the sake of her showing career, you should become her handler. :)
