She wakes up crying every night crying. She takes a 2 hr nap in the daytime. I put her to bed between 8 pm to 9 pm. She's been waking up for quite some time now. I thought she would grow out of it but she still does it. Someone told me she may have a medical condition and I need to get it checked out. Could this be true?

It actually could be a medical issue. My son never slept through the night - EVER. He seemed fine to us and it turns out that it is because he had uncontrolled asthma and allergies.

He was taking allergy medicines from the time he was one but they were not strong enough.

Once they got his allergies and asthma under control he was a different child. He sleeps so much better.

The dr explained it like this: if you can't breathe well, you cannot sleep well. Adults wake up, figure out their problems and go back to sleep. Babies wake up and.......... you guessed it.....cry.

It could be a million things. Get her checked out by the dr. Let him know your concerns. Chances are it is nothing but better to be safe than sorry.

Good luck!

Dear Mom, I wouldn't rule out any tests where your child is concerned, simply because of her eating so much food. Getting to the not sleeping thru the nite - I don't know when you wake up in the morning, but if you could wake this child up at let's say 6 or 7 in the morning, and let her do her daily activities, but then add to them some by taking her to the park and letting her play more vigorously or walking her at lengthy walks. In other words tiring her out some. Don't let her take any naps during the day. I would lay money that she will not give you any problems on sleeping the whole nite thru once she is put to bed. She just sounds like a very active child, and needs alot of energy to be happy, but if you are letting her take naps during the day, that can be one of your causes that she is not sleeping during the nite. Plus, a biggie is keeping her on a schedule. Most parents don't do this with their children anymore. Big mistake, that is why so many parents have problems with their children. Keeping a child on a "Schedule" is the best thing you can do for any child, as they fall into a routine (which benefits the whole house) and they know what is expected of them. DC

More than likely, all you have to do is stop letting her take a nap in the daytime. I did that when my son was 2, and he started sleeping through the night. It'll take a bit of time to keep her awake all day, but just make sure you keep her busy so she doesnt fall asleep. Keep putting her down for the night between 8 and 9pm. Once she gets the hang of staying awake all day and going to bed at the same time, there shouldnt be a problem. Just remember, nothing happens overnight. Just be patient. Hope this helps!

I would suppose it depends on how often she wakes up. Is this just once a night, or several times? My son is 2 (26 months actually) and he still wakes up in the night. It isn't every single night, but we have weeks where he will wake up at least once, sometimes twice. Bad dreams, the temperature in his room isn't comfortable, its too dark. . a lot of things can cause a little one to wake. You should check the surroundings, make sure everything is comfortable for her. Also! I have found that giving him his bath about 1 hour before bed time helps him get a full nights rest (and me too!!). You should take to your pediatrician about this if you are really concerned, they may have some good tips as well and if there is a medical concern better to get it taken care of now than later! Good luck :)

My two year old also wakes up in the middle of the night.. Its probably just habit. If you have a concern it is medical it is always best to have her checked. Better safe than sorry! Although i have learned that cio for me doesn't work.. It may work for you.. For me i stay in the room with her but basically ignore it and she will go back to sleep. i have tried this 4 nights in a row and last night she only woke once for 2 minutes and went back to sleep.. When i started she was up almost 4 times a night....

my boy when they were about the same age had nightmares, specifically about monsters, so being the good dad I am, I figured I would tell them a story about a dinosaur that visited our house regularly trying to scare anyone he could. But I got mad, so my answer goes and told the dinosaur who I named George, that if he came to my house to scare people I would have to spank him and make him cry. (this monster nightmare it seems came from trees casting shadows in the room at night from a very bright light from behind them 2 houses away. As the wind moved them it appeared that they were entering the room and scared my boys. Hiding under the covers was a nightly event on any night the winds moved the branches.

Kids minds do invent things, but you can't be too careful, so I would have the child check by a pediatrician and tell him/her why I was doing that for them.

Hi there, why not try this first, why not let her nap for only i hour during the day , take her to the park ,if there is one close to you and let her play to get herself tired out, and just before bed time if there is space in your home let her run around and play tag, then get her a warm bath before bed time.

I have found that diets have a lot to do with lack of sleeping not just for small children but also for adults. Having a set schedule for meals allowing at least 3 hours to digest usually helps. Also, you could find lots of helpful material at your local health food store:-)

You could take her to the doctor and have her fully checked out, it that comes back all clear maybe she will just have to cry it out.

It is possible, but most of the time it is just habit for them....and sometime you just have to let them cry themselves back to sleep.....as much as you don't like to....
