I want to take $20 to a roulette table and am wondering what the smartest way to gamble it is.

There is no strategy for winning, as the game is pure chance.
However, if you get lucky early on, the wise thing to do is put all your winnings in your pocket except for your original $20, and keep playing with that until you lose it. Each time you win, pocket everything over $20.
That way you can enjoy your game!

Clearly, nobody here has studied statistics.

Best strategy is to not play or play a game with better odds, but that's not what you want to hear. If you MUST play, then the best strategy is to play only one spin.

Assuming you are playing on a wheel with only one "00" at 1-36 on the rest of the wheel, then you have an expected return of 97.2973% no matter where you bet. Red/black, corners, thirds... doesn't matter your odds are 97.2973% expected return... basically the 2.7027% odds coming from the "00" (1/37) is the casino's profit margin.

When you do only one spin, you are going to have a 48.64% odds-weighted chance of winning and a large standard deviation of what the results on the wheel are going to be. As you add spins, your odds drop as your "luck" starts looking like a normal distribution curve based on what the odds are supposed to be like. In the far extreme, if you had an infinite amount of spins, you have 0.0% chance of winning and a 100% chance of giving 2.7027% of your money to the casino.

The "double down" method also does not work. Let's say you have $255. You start with $1 and start doubling your bet. You have a 48.6% odds-adjusted chance of winning a dollar. Lose? Double it and you try to win back the buck and the $2 on the table. And so on. In the end, you've tried 8 times. The chances of winning small is large and lose everything is small. Guess what... on a risk-adjusted basis... it's the same odds.

Casinos love people who think that they have a system. In roulette, there is no way around the odds. In almost every other game, there are few loopholes.

There are three. Go play craps, the only Las Vegas style game where there are times during the game where the odds are in your favor. You can also tilt Blackjack in your favor if you can count cards (but you'll get booted). The third is poker and only if you are good enough to beat everyone and pay for the casino's cut. But that's skill, not luck.

As a comedian once said, you can play the payphone. Put your coin in the slot, pull the coin return and have a 100% chance of winning all your money back. No free drinks, though. :)

Whe nI play roulette (im no pro, or anything like that a very casual maybey 4 times a year) the hardest thing I learned was to pay little to no attention to the history of the previous numbers, the wheel does not care if there has been 5 reds shown up all in the 1st 12, remember its all chance. the strategy mentioned however (doubling up (lose $1 bet $2, then $4... works pretty well, however be consistent on betting either red or black pick one color and it is bound to hit sooner or later.. patience and luck...

you need more than 20 for roulette. how i used to play was bringing a bunch of money, play 1/3 odds (1st 12, 2nd 12 or 3rd 12) what you do is put $10 on one of them. if you lose, you put $20 on the same one, lose again you put $40 on that one. eventually youll hit it and you win 3xs that amount. you just need patience and lots of cash. usually i keep doubling my amounts until i win twice in a row.

i like to play two of the 2 to 1 sections on the end of each column. It gives you about 66% chance of winning. place two 5's one in each...if you win you'll only gain 5 bucks. (lose one 5, and win 10 on the other) That's my strategy. Kinda risky, cause if you lose, you lose 10.
I did it that way for a while in Vegas. It made me 60 bucks, and then i left and went to a movie.
My guess is, if you keep playing it, you'll lose it all over again.

Good luck

Play even/odd or red/black. The lower the odds, the longer you can play.
