I recommend two books -- Happiest Toddler on the Block by Dr Karp. He offers some great advice on talking "kid speak" to children. Basically he recommends acknowledging their frustration in their simple language versus trying to reason with them...he won't be ready to listen to you until he feels heard and understood. Also I recommend The Wonder of Boys by Michael Gurian. The behavior you are describing is essentially how boys are biologically wired...it helps to understand the biology (namely testosterone!) that drives little boys...and he talks about different strategies for gaining their cooperation as well as discipline. Good luck!

My 5 year old sometimes gets out of hand and I start by lowering the amount of simulation like TV, video games, radio, toys other kids so he can listen to me and concentrate on what I'm saying. If he still is bouncing around I sit down with him so we are eye level (I never like to look down at him) and have him look me in the eyes while I explain what I need from him and get him to agree. Often I have him repeat to me what it is he agreed to instead just saying yes, that way I know he heard me. It works for me. I have found that if you show them respect they will do the same to you (yelling or hitting a child has never done any good for anyone).

I know the feeling my oldest is the same way. The best thing that worked for me was activities. Swimming class in the evening is always nice to wear them out at night. Get him outside and have something for him to do some chore. Rake leaves, put them in bags, have him vaccum, bring the dirty clothes into the laundry room.
My son has ADHD and he is 11 now, the early years were tough, if he does have it they don't like to diagnose it till there are in full time school.
Good Luck

Maybe he is acting out because of the attention the new baby is getting. I used to work in pre-school and when a child is wanting attention, they will get it whether it be positive or negative attention. Maybe you should try and set aside special times during the day that you have just mommy time with your 5 year old. I have a 15 year old and a 5 year old, and I still have to set aside mommy time for my 15 year old or he gets jealous! Good luck and take care.

There are a lot of ways you can try to calm him down during the day. You can try to tire him out by having him help with chores around the house and do exercises. I have heard Karate classes work very well.
Another suggestion would be to watch the food he eats with dye in them. That was a problem my nephew.

Benadryl can make him tired if you need him to slow and give you a break for an evening. But i don't recommend it on a regular basis. Also pressure pints for his nervous system. Holding him in your lap putting pressure on the outside of his biceps. The top of his thighs is another pressure point. tight hugs. do this while watching TV with him. It has to do with the nervous system not developing fast enough. Maybe it will help your son as it did mine,

I have a 6yr. old son whom was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 4 because I kept pushing his doctor to re-examine him. You may need to get a second opinion. It appears to me that your son is ADHD and need medication even if it's only a mild medication. I've had to deal with my ADHD son in public with my other 3 kids. Good luck.

Give him projects to do, or ask him to help you do stuff with the 10 month old baby. Reduce or eliminate sugary stuff from his diet like juice and cookies. usually hyperactiveness is a sign of boredom and a kid who is just way too smart. :- )

Five across the eyes. A backhand.

I know...not nice to say. But has anyone else noticed that, a generation ago, no one had these problems? Thats because my mother wwould slap the shyte out of me if I disobeyed. One might call that child abuse - but it worked. Sometimes, a kid just need a good hard slap to remind them who is boss.
