Okay, even big air craft carriers are known for their tiny living quarters and storage for personnel. So my question is; If naval ships are so cramped for storage space then why does the Navy have so many uniforms? Seriously, I think there's atleast 5 seperate uniforms per person. It's crazy.

I thought they had the white ones, cammies, dress blues (not sure if that's what their called in the navy) , the khaki ones, and something else can't remember.

The US navy has these different uniforms:
1. Dress blues
2. Decoration Whites
3. Khaki
4. Summer Blues
5. Winters
6. BDU's
The dress blues are worn in accordance to a national holiday. The dress blues are now what US Sailors will graduate from boot camp wearing. They are no longer wearing the Sailors Whites
Decoration Whites are used for important events. Just like the name, decoration. Whites are worn for Captains and above when they are visiting a certain base. Whites are to show off all your ribbons, and medals earned.
Khakis are worn by Petty Officer 3rd Class and above. It is a sign of power and leadership. Khakis are work uniform.
Summer Blues are worn by cadets in ROTC, or JROTC. Or a sailor who is in schooling.
Winters are the same as Summer Blues, and they are worn during winter seasons.
BDU's are now being worn by based sailors. They are just like the army / marine corps one.
The US navy has a lot of uniforms in accordance to our jobs. We are no different than any other branch except we partake in a lot of different working environments. On a ship, yes it is very tiny, and the living quarters are tight. However, A sailor onboard a ship has three uniforms. 1. Working uniform, 2. Their whites, and a spare working uniform. It is all they need when they are onboard.
If you are an officer on board a ship you need your khakis and your whites. Thats it.

OK, It's been18 yrs + since I had to maintain a seabag, and I know that uniforms do change from time to time, but it's not all that bad. Back then only CBs or corpsmen assigned to a marine unit wore BDUs. There were dress blues, dress whites, working blues, working whites, salt and peppers (briefly, was a combo of working blue pants and working white shirt, worn in summer) and dungarees. 2 sets of everything, 6 for the dungarees. Dont forget 2 kinds of socks, and dixie cups. Work boots and dress shoes. T-shirts, underwear, PT gear and sneakers. 4 ea. washcloths and towels. This was all packed into one seabag, along with some personal items. The Navy teaches you to pack small, which can be a benefit if you become a traveller. There is a reason we roll our socks. I had another locker besides the coffin locker, so there was plenty of room for civilian clothes and other stuff.
I was E-4, Khakis were for E-7,8,9 and Officers.

Jason M, you've got a few mistakes in your answer there. Khakis are currently worn by E-7 and above and officers. E-6 and below wear utilities for work, which look pretty much like a prison type uniforms. By summer blues, I'm assuming that you mean the working blues, which are currently worn in the colder months at shore commands, basically by office workers. There are also the coveralls, which is the uniform of choice for submariners when they're underway. In the next year or so, BDU's are supposed to be replacing the utilities and coveralls, and the working blues/whites are being replaced by a khaki shirt with black pants. They'll probably still keep coveralls for sub guys.

Actually, the Navy is in the process of rectifing that. They just went through a major Task Force Uniform survey, and have... slimmed down our uniforms.
We are going to digital cammies, a working uniform, and dress uniforms.

Uniforms fit easily when properly folded into the coffin locker which is located under the mattress. There is a stand up locker as well about the size of your high school locker which stores the dress uniforms. Everything that a sailor needs has a place and a way to store it.

I spent 20 years in the navy and have been in almost every uniform. That's right, you could spend 20 years in and never use all of them. You don't have to have all the uniforms, just need them on certain occasions. I have never worn my "Dinner Dress Blues". This uniform requires special medals to be worn. You just have to take it as it comes.

How did you get accepted to both academies with such bad spelling and punctuation? Maybe your dad's a general or an admiral? But if I had the choice of those two academies, I would go to the air force no doubt, but only if I had a realistic chance to be a fighter pilot. They've got the baddest planes. You don't have to land them on carriers, but that's more of an aerobatic stunt than a combat skill.

Hmm..I only had 2 uniform types, work uniform and dress whites. This was before they changed the uniforms though so after that change, it may be different.

Yes there is many types of uniforms, and the sailors are taught how to fold and pack them in thier locker properly.

Your tax dollars have to go somewhere. Seriously, it is about being a credit to your service, looking good while doing it and most importantly representing your country with pride. Yea my answer is a bunch of b.s. but its the best i can come up with right now.
