It was hammered into me in school that the word is NOT pronounced "berry". The correct pronunciation is "burry". If I had pronounced it any other way in school, I'd have risked getting my hand whacked with a ruler by one of the nuns.

Before I moved to Bury I pronounced it as E but after living here for 9 years and working there I know it's U.

To be honest it can be used either way
we have some bury places
and some berry places so I think most of it comes from the way locals pronounce the word
hope this helps

I am in the United States and I have never heard the "U" as in bus pronunciation. Of course, we Americans have done a rather nice job over the past 225 years of butchering the queen's English, so what do I know?
I know of several cities in the US that end in "...bury" that are pronounced "berry."

Bury near Manchester is Bury. (I just asked my sister who's at uni there...)
Bury as in Bury St Edmunds is Berry. (we learnt about that town as school, as I went to St Edmund's College)
I think its beacuse of the local accent for a start, and obviously how the name of the town has evolved. Also, with Bury St Edmunds, its literally because of the burial of St Edmund...

Most people I've heard say it as "berry" instead of "Bury" I think it just depends on where you live and how things are pronounced. I live in Tennessee and most people think we pronounce everything! But I agree with you

It's usually pronounced Berry.
Although when people from Bury say it in their Lancashire accent is sounds more like B'ry
