Get this, I have the same thing, one on each hand. And I was unfortunate enough to sit on one in grade school, so I have graphite on my bum. I have asked the doctor if it is anything to worry about, and he said "no". As long as the pencil was graphite and not lead there is no problem. Graphite is not toxic to the human body, so we are in the clear!!

I have a graphite mark on my right ring finger. I got poked by a pencil also. But it isn't a solid chunk of graphite. Back when it happened my teacher said it will be kind of like a tattoo, the mark will always be there. I wouldn't be worried if you only have a mark such as I do. Now if it is a chunk, depending how long ago the 3rd grade was for you, you may want to get some advice from your doctor. But you can rest assure that you are going to be just fine! Here are some links about this issue:

omg! this is so wierd! when i was in 5th grade somebody accidentally stabbed me with a pencil just below my thumb on my right hand and the graphite is still there! all i have to tell you is that they stopped putting lead in pencils because of lead poisioning and started using graphite because its completely harmless to you. so if i was you i would get surgery to get it out so you dont have to look at it for the rest of your life, but other than that its completely harmless. :)

I got stabbed in the 9th grade (I'm 43 now) by a pencil and the tip is still in my hand. It looks like a tattoo spot. I've never had a problem with it. I don't jack with it either though.

I have a piece of a pencil tip in my finger. It has been there for 5 years and I have no problem. I guess a doctor can get it out though....

Nope. It's not lead as in lead poisoning. I've got one in my hand since third grade, too. I'm 28 now. You could have it removed for cosmetic reasons, I suppose, but if you were going to have trouble, you would have by now. Third grade is dangerous.

I've had one in my hand (my sister stabbed me) since 1964, and it hasn't killed me yet. I can assure you, it's perfectly harmless.
