Back lash to be different than their parents generation. Also fear, fear of attacks from terrorists, fear of moral decay etc. Ignorance too. I think a fair amount of people think that no party should be in power for too long, so they like to mix it up. All I know is that in my opinion the Republicans have been in power messing things up for too long. Clinton may have been a sleazy two timer but he paid that dam national debt down what has Bush done except keep us in this losing very expensive war? I feel less safe than ever, and the real issues that America needs resolved keep going on the back burner such as health care, fair wages, a system for voting that we can be sure is safe and tamper proof. I just hope that this last election is a sign that the tide is turning.

There is such misinformation in the regular stream of news about who and what people are. Republicans are not uncaring and rich people. It is only recently that studies are showing the truth about the differences between the two major parties in the USA. The Democratic party has more "rich" members in the Congress than the Republican party. But the truth that doesn't seem to hit the media -- anywhere -- is that the Republican values of Lincoln are alive today. Republicans give more. They are more involved. They are indeed the party of Lincoln -- but alas that doesn't fit in with the notion that Republicans are stingy, warmongers, unkind, or whatever the latest notion is. I would encourage everyone to read the source material mentioned below. (And as a side note, I like the questioner, vote for a person not a party......)

Take a historic past lesson, monetary complications continually arise at the same time as there's a Democrat president and/or and democratically managed senate and homestead. Republicans continually shop theyre a**'s and then the ordinary public in many situations votes Republican for some words, and then they fall decrease back into a similar mistake. i will admit that Bush turned right into a moron, yet maximum Republicans are not like that. Dems ***** putting forward Reps are so stereotypical about Gays, yet maximum dems are stereotypical about Republicans absolutely listening to in spite of the indisputable fact that hollywood throws at them.

Good question! I do think there's some of that "climbing the social ladder" wishful thinking, but it rarely works.
The main reason, IMO, is that the media is almost exclusively controlled by the Right. People who watch mainstream news and programming usually buy into right-wing propaganda, since they're not given any opposing viewpoints. If they ARE better-educated, they'll tend to watch C-span, NPR or get their news from more reliable Internet sites.
I second what Ande Deel wrote below!

I have wondered about this myself and the only answer that I can come up with is that they wish to identify themselves with the "patriotic, family values" party. In my opinion, they are either afraid to look behind the curtain or they are deluding themselves into thinking that they are like Bush and Co., no matter what the empirical evidence. If the person is in the relgious right then I have observed that they excuse the behavior of their party as being "imperfect but repentant". Newt Ginrich and many others have benefited from that ideal. It's puzzling to me.

Wife-beater trailer trash types vote Republican because they have some kind of idea that the Republicans are somehow more macho. It is also why many endomorph kids you knew in high school who regularly got beat up by girls, also become Republicans. Anyone who makes under $100,000 a year is voting against their own best interests when they vote Republican.

I am considered in the bracket you described and I usually vote republican because of the moral issues such as abortion, stem cell research and immigration. Yes, I do need help financially sometimes but I don;t want to sell out my ethics either

To our credit, most middle and low income Americans like myself don't believe in income and asset redistribution. Taking money from the rich to give to us is insulting. We can earn it ourselves, thanks much.
