A bag-valve-mask is the device that we position over the patient's nose and mouth to force air into the lungs. In some cases, we will endotracheally intubate a patient (put a tube into their windpipe) that will allow us to provide better ventilation for the patient. In this case, we attach the bag-valve device to the endotracheal tube.

In some advanced care situations, we can also attach the endotracheal tube to an automated ventilator (sometimes called a respirator). There are a few variations of these devices, but they all work on basically the same principal - they force air into the patient's lungs, then allow the patient to naturally exhale.
