Sorry, I disagree! Although -being an impressionist myself- I absolutely love Manet I thing Monet is the greatest master of impressionism, strictly spoken. Degas, for example, is very inspirational as well but he does not have in his paintings (subjects) all of Monet's variety.
However I respect your opinion, and if Manet is it for you, then OK

i don't think that they can be compared in that way. also, if i remember correctly, Manet is not a straight impressionist but either came before or after the main bulk of impressionist painting, of which Monet and Renoir are better examples. Degas is also not a straight impressionist painter. there are divisions amongst them.

pissaro was [for me] the best. he had the same style as monet yet his paintings were more humane, tried out other styles including poitillism was a tutor/guide to cezanne and was influential on gauguin. i like manets paintings, especially his early stuff. its funny how artists get lumped together just because they stood up to the french salons yet really have little in common. degas, manet, seurat, mary cassat, cezanne and gauguin have all been labelled impressionists yet none of them in my oppinion are impressionists.

Although Manet was grouped with the Impressionists, I don't his work was typically impressionistic. My favourite impressionists are the two that were not in that group; James Whistler and JMW Turner.

Monet as an old man had magnificent paintings..His texture was so thick, there were almost channels between each shape. Even cheap photographic copies of these works are outstanding. Have you noticed that so many doctors' offices hang copies of Monet? I think is more greatly appreciated. He is tied for first place as far as I am concerned. The other painter I adore is Dali. A strange combo, I know.

I am not a great fan of Monet either. My favourite impressionist is Berthe Morisot.
