The ones you meet on the internet are just as scary as the ones you meet in person.
I'm not saying the net is bad for meeting, just no better than the real world.

I am 36 but never been married. I have joined church groups with people my age and met good friends that way.
With the dating scene I am dating this guy and we met on a dating site (mate1.com) which is FREE for women. People are on their to make friends AND the possibiltiy to meet that special someone. My b/f and I have been dating 6 months now and going strong. The funny thing about it though we met on line and it turned out he lived up the block from me!
Good luck to you!

It is wise to be scared of the internet. Get outside locally to see and be seen, the men will find you. If you do find yourself in an on-line deal and decide to meet- make it in public and leave yourself an escape route

Just take it one day and one step at a time - don't be scared of anything - rejection happens - jerks happen - and sometimes good things happen - Don't go and TRY to find yourself a date - let it happen naturally whether through the interent or through other avenues

Instead of going straight into the dating game, just chat with people online or in real life... Join a class - yoga, martial arts, gym... And take it from there...
