What does this role include? Has anyone ever heard of having a wedding hostess before? Is it similar to being a wedding planner without the planning?

Ask her what it means. She wanted you to have a special role in her wedding so only she can tell you what it is that she needs from you.

Typically a wedding hostess will direct the seating at the wedding, make certain everyone signs the guestbook, helps with assigned seating at the reception (if there is any), and makes the announcements throughout the reception such as the entrance of the happy couple, the beginning of their first dance, the bouquet toss, etc. to make sure that everything runs smoothly. It is a very important role and one I'm sure she would appreciate a trusted friend doing.
P.S. Just think - you are getting included in the wedding without the fee of the bridesmaid's dress!

Maybe she just needs you to help pay for the wedding-LOL just kidding. I think a wedding hostess is like a wedding planner but instead of hiring a wedding planner they have a few wedding hostesses to help plan out the wedding.

The reason you haven't heard of it is because it doesn't exist. The bride and groom are the hosts, not anyone else.

The hosts are the planners. So if she expects you to be the hostess, then the plans would be yours to make, not hers since she passed on that duty to you.

However, the coordinator who makes sure that all goes smoothly (which some incorrectly call the planner) is someone else's job.

Yeah a wedding hostess is basically helping with the wedding planning and on the wedding day making sure that things go smoothly. Keeping the vendors and guest in check.

Ask her she thinks this job entitles. We asked a friend to do a similar job not because we didn't want her to be in the wedding but, because she is one tough woman who will keep everything going on track (basically same as a master of ceremonies for us except she will also be available to deal with family issues that are worrying us )I asked her as I trust her completely. With all our parents being divorced having her gives us a third party to try and help prevent one parent from being mad that another( i have a cousin who was mad that her daughters step mom was standing close to her during a moment when she didn't think she should have been there) Stupid yes but sometimes parents can't be trusted to be adults.

Well it boils down to this...she wants you to feel included, but she doesn't want to have you IN the wedding. She has asked you to be the wedding hostess, not the planner. The hostess is the one who will oversee all the "crap" the day of the wedding. She just doesn't want to have to be responsible for it herself. Don't accept, you'll be doing too much and not enjoying yourself. Leave it to her maid of honor.

I would assume you would be like a wedding planner - ask her specifically what it entails before agreeing. Quite honestly, I would rather just come as a guest as that point!!

I did the same of my best friend. She sounded hurt and I explained to her that I trusted her more than anything to be a hostess because it to me was a more important "job" that I needed who I could trust most with the important details.
