I have two parakeets, and one of them is the friendliest one in the world, you give him coconut pieces, and he'll take them from you, he'll let you pet him and everything. The other one is afraid of his shadow. You just move your hand in his general direction and he'll go crazy. Is there anything I can do to make the scardey cat one behave more like his friend?

Basically they came at separate times. The friendly one came first about three years ago, and the unfriendly one came three months after. He's gotten better, but the past couple of weeks have been a recession.

I currently have seven budgies in various stages of tame-ness.

The method i use is to take one to my bedroom, separate from the others, and work with it there. Since I have such a large flock I need to do this with them regularly, or they revert to a more "wild" state.

Separating them totally might not be a bad idea until it is tamed, but you may have to deal with flock calls.

Millet is always a good tool.

Good luck!

When did you get the untamed one? The best way to tame a bird is to keep him away from the other birds and spend time with him. If you do this, he will be more likely be not scared like this and evetually become like his friend. Only put him back with his friend when he is not scared of you any more.

You have to build its trust and this may take a while with lofs of Patience. Try not to scare it because it makes things worse. Offer treats slowly that he will like. After so many times he will eventually warm up to you.

Time resilience and patience are the key factors here, start gradually by trying to get him used to your hand in the safety of his own cage, after you and he get that mastered, try outside the cage, it sounds like he or she was never finger tame, and if its not too late it will just take time.
