farm work. if it's summer they would be trying to stay cool.
if it's winter they would be trying to stay warm. working outside tending animals or plants.
if they worked inside, it would be a factory. they would not have nice clothes. they would be ripped and dirty. remember there were no washing machines and no running water for daily baths.

Which country, which area, which job. A young black farmhand would be wearing less than a northern farm boy, women woudl be wearing skirts, slips and blouses and possibly bonnets and aprons.
