Prayer is the one sure way to help. But one must be careful not to pray for anything that may not be for the highest good. In some cases the homeless experience may be Karma or an avenue to bring an individual closer to the Creater or to give yet another an opportunity to have such an experience to be able to help someone else via this challenge.
Perhaps we can fill alot of the abandoned buildings via volunteers doing repairs etc.
Hold the banks and other financial institutions who create situations where people cannot afford to pay their mortgages etc. accountable for alot of homeless situations.

I know this might sound contrite - but one person at a time. The Bible teaches us that the poor we will always have among us - there is no ending that until we are all done living on this planet. We can only help those who are in "world" and teach others to be responsive to the needs of the poor. I teach middle school and you'd be surprised at how few of them have been taught to SHARE what they have, to give instead of always expecting something, to surrender a gift of their own to some child, to pick an angel from the Angel tree and help some needy child - they don't see their own parents do it, so we are raising a generation of children who don't feel the need to share and give to others. Our hearts have to change and become tender to the needs of others. We have to stop being so self-centered and greedy. We are all guilty and this is not the season to do it and stop - we should be giving all the time.

Ever heard of the 'starfish' parable or anecdote? It's about this young fella who noticed an older man walking by the seashore. And from time to time the old man would stop and stoop down to pick up something, then fling it to the ocean as far as he could.
The kid caught up with the old man and had to satisfy his own curiosity, only to find out that the old man was picking up starfish that were beached. But the kid noticed there were thousands of them strewn all across the strand and finally asked: 'Surely you cannot help all these starfish back to their home?! Why do you even bother doing this??'
And the old man flung another one and said: 'I hope I made a difference to that one...'
MORAL: We can also make the difference by helping them "one at a time..."
Peace be with you.

Start where you live. Go out and do the work--in a soup kitchen, with a local group, whatever. You can certainly give someone else money to do it for you...but take it from me, it's not the same thing at all.

Giving is good. But teaching them how to be self independent is more important. That takes a honest and planned approach.
Its like this. If you feed me a fish, you will satisfy my hunger. But if you teach me how to fish, then I will never go hungry again.

We can choose to help them, but the thing that matters most is helping the ones who are not choosing to live a life like that.

Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Romans 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Romans 10:11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
Romans 10:12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Romans 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
Romans 10:15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
Jesus said there will always be poor people on the earth:
Matthew 26:11 For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.
Mark 14:7 For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.
John 12:8 For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.

I know this goes against one of the most basic doctrines of the Church, but I still believe that massive birth control is the answer.
