You need to be aware that your Dad's NCB will have expired 2 years after his last policy ended. If he is going to insure the car in his name and have you as the named driver then he needs to be the registered owner and keeper of that car.
You also need to check if there is a restriction on the amount of time a named driver can drive on the policy as many insist that the policy holder uses the car for more time than the named driver, if you have an accident and it is found that your Dad never/rarely drives the car it can invalidate your insurance.

If your dad has current insurance, he will have ncb, but you will have to check with the insurance company if they will take you on as a risk. New drivers tend to cost a lot to insure.

OK.
I had a mini I was quoted £950 3rd party and that was the cheapest!
I then done a Pass Plus (£100) and then told the insurance company and they knocked £375 off my bill.
Norwich Union where the best for me and I seriously reccommend the Pass+

no cheap comprehensive cover for your age and inexperience
check internet motor insurance sites
you have to state on the application form that you will be the main driver of the vehicle
if he hasnt been driving for a few years he wont have any insurance will he //they are annual policies
better to have policy in your own name anyway so you can start to build up your own NCD

Yes he would still have his NCD, but he would need to prove it, So I hope kept all his old Policies, or can at least remember his last insurer, as they should still have a record./
