No. If you can't truthfully say something nice, say nothing except thank you.
I find that you can usually find something nice to say about someone though.

My first answer is no, especially if they are fishing for a return compliment or some other manipulation. But there is a situation where I would happily give the compliment even if it wasn't what I was thinking; the situation is when a friend needs a pick me up and owns up to what they need like "These new pants make me look great, don't they?" The "right answer" is clear in their question so I'll give them that.

I never give compliment that I don't mean as I think it's false and you can spot when someone is being false a mile off. I'd say there's no need to repay a compliment if you don't mean it.

Someone said, in the business world yes....I only know that to be true if you're dealing with the Japanese where that sort of thing has life changing influence!
In other businesses and in your personal life.....it depends on your personality. If you feel the need to pay an untrue compliment, then do so, if your conscience can live that. If not, then don't........just say thank you and accept theirs gracefully with "thank you for such a nice compliment".

Nope............if I am paid a compliment I have learned to say 'thank you' but I do not feel obliged to repay it unless I genuinely mean it.

No. Hopefully they gave the compliment because they sincerely liked something about you, not because they were fishing for a return. You can just say thank you.

Most of the time, when you try to compliment the other person, it sounds insincere and lame. The best thing to do is to simply say 'Thank you'.

It depends.
If you come across someone who you havent seen in ages, and could care less if you ever did again, and they brightly say "Its so good to see you!", its common to say it back. But if you see someone at a party and they are dressed in something so horrible that everyone is talking about it and they tell you "You look great tonight!", you could simply say "Thank you, I changed a number of times...yadda yadda..." all babbling in order to refrain from commenting on thier own outfit.

Yeah I do. If someone compliments me and I like something about them ill compliment them back. If i dont really have anything else to say ill just say thanks. I wonder if people find it annoying?
