My husband is a contractor. He gets better prices because he buys in bulk. He also buys all of his materials from the same store. He has an in store account and when he gets material on credit they give him a discount.

Sometimes its just a matter of signing up as a contractor at a supply house. And i mean it...simply saying I am a contractor, I want your discount. You do not need to buy in bulk. Not many contractors do..

They buy in volume. They buy often. They also tend to know just what it is they are buying, so the seller doesn't often have to accept returns or deal with issues relating to problems with inexperienced buyers installing the wrong things..
Contractors make it easier for the sellers to do their business, so they can offer a lower pricepoint.

Most major building supply stores give the contractors extra off as an insentive to buy from thier store. They are regualr customers, and the stores want to be accomidating if possible.
