ive been on several different ones.
they were never really like crack cocaine, although when i got off of them i started self medicating with other prescription drugs.

i believe they are too quick to write the prescription before actually looking into the problem. as with all the kids with attention defecit disorder now. that is something else that is overly diagnosed. i wish they would realize that some prozac or celexa or ritalin or adderal isnt going to completely fix someones life.

not all antidepresants are habit forming, in fact, those that are should be replaced almost entirely on the market relatively quickly. those with the strongest side affects and addiction risks are being more closely monitored by the drs and insurance companies. As the neurobiology of mood disorders and the mechanisms of action of antidepressant drugs continue to be elucidated, there has been a shift in emphasis from changes in neurotransmitter release and metabolism to regulation of gene expression and neuroprotection. Evidence from animal studies suggests that drug therapy may act on specific transcription factors and target genes that regulate processes such as neuroprotection and neuronal survival. Clinical studies consistently identify changes in prefrontal cortex, hippocampus and amygdala that may be related to the course of illness and may be prevented with successful treatment. Together, these findings suggest that clinically relevant neurobiological correlations may ultimately be identified in patients who respond and remit to treatment. With these and future advances in the neuroscience of psychiatry, it may be possible to identify biological markers that will help in decisions about specific treatments for an individual patient.

I have been on antidepressants for a while. From my own experience, they have helped me alot. I am not on a high or anything like that and feel normal emotions. It just helps with the depression and I feel like I can cope with life a whole lot better, without all the panic attacks.

One of the true wonder drugs, the whole line of SSRIs. But they are not a cure-all and they can't work miracles. Taking a pill alone cannot solve most people's problems but for those with a chemical imbalance they are nothing short of amazing.

There is good and bad. Some people definitely need them. There are definite side effects. Do some research on the specific one you may take, obtain sound medical advice and make a decision.
