You can crate train your puppy if you choose but what you'll end up with is a crate trained puppy, not a house trained one.
If you want to house train him, you need to keep him in the room with you during training so you can watch him. Take him out after a nap, hard playing, a long drink, if he looks restless or hasn't been out for a while. You need to go out with him, say "go pee" and the very instant he pees, give him lots and lots of praise, then come right back in. This way he learns to differentiate between play time and potty time outside.
When he makes a mistake, quietly clean it up unless you catch him in the act. Then tell him no firmly, take him out and praise if he finishes. Dogs learn very well through positive reinforcement and by not giving him the chance to make mistakes, he'll get lots of praise. At 13 weeks he doesn't have much control yet, so you need to be patient and watchful. You're also building a relationship of trust with your puppy which will carry over into other training.
He will need the crate at night and when you're not home until he's old enough to be reliably house trained and be past the chewing stage.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aMQd7
A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

The best way to potty train a dog from my experience is to take them outside every 30mins outside to potty. Right after they wake up and fed. When they start smelling the ground and going in circles, quickly take them outside. Praise them and give them a treat when they potty. If they don't potty, then bring them home and take them out in the next 30 min. They should be potty trained in 5 days or less. They should start stitting at the door, meaning it's potty time.

Try a crate. It may seem inhumane to some, but really it is the best way to do this. Whenever you cannot be right there with him in case he has to go, put him in the crate. He will likely not go where he sleeps and sits. Get a crate big enough for his to turn around in and lie comfortably. Don't put a cushion in there right away in case he does have an accident. When you let him out take him straight outside. Trust me it worked with our 2 dogs. And they have grown to love their crates - they will choose to go in on their own and spend a good amount of their time inside!

we used positive reinforcement to train our two puppies and it worked really well! not only did we not scare our pups into getting trained by getting angry or yelling, but they also associate going outside with great things!
all you have to do is take the dog out VERY OFTEN until you start to connect with him. every time he starts to "go" while he's outside, don't blatantly interrupt (you'll startle him into stopping with the business) but calmly say "go-od boy..." while he's going. It's important to say the praises while he is actually going, otherwise he will think that being done is the good part. Or if you treat him when you get back in the house he'll think that's the good part.
Remember, dogs are simple minded and pretty easy to figure out. If there is something you want them to do, reward them each and every time they do it and they'll do it over and over and over as often as they can to please you!

Another vote from me for crate training - the easiest way to be successful with potty training for any breed.

DO NOT USE PEE-PADS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! try taking your dog outside every 30 minutes and making sure that he pees/poos, praise him EVERY time he goes to the bathroom outside. also, if you see him going to the bathroom inside, pick him up and rush him outside and let him finish. praise him for going outside. also, he is only 2 months old. he has a pretty small bladder, even for a great dane. for every month old they are, that is the number of hours max that they can "hold it", or not have to go. Also, crate training is very effective.
Good Luck!
