They follow a set of dietary rules called "The Word of Wisdom" that one of the Founders of the Religion wrote, I think Joseph Smith.
Meat in moderation, no booze, no tobacco, no caffeine - actually good common sense and healthy too.

Well, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out drinking alcohol impairs your reflexes and mental processes. I have read Section 89 of the Doctrine and Covenants before, and one of the reasons we avoid alcohol is because of the "evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days." I am still waiting for the day when a beer company will show a car accident caused by anyone of any age who has been drinking and driving. I had a great-uncle killed by a drunk driver, and my father's 17-year-old brother was run over and killed while in the company of some teenaged boys who were drinking. I also believe there is a dark spirit in most bars. A dependence on alcohol will slow down your spiritual growth and interfere with your ability to make decisions. We are supposed to avoid highly caffeinated drinks as well, and I have also learned the hard way about that. I will eat chocolate but have learned that even too much chocolate is not good for anyone. It's best to have a balanced diet and work on emphasizing fruits and vegetables. Herbal teas are good for when you are sick or doing a cleanse. I try to look for herbal teas without added caffeine, but if I am really, really dragging I might have some with caffeine. My weakness is probably sugar and chocolate, so I just try to keep that to a minimum.

Question for the Mormons: Do you eat chocolate, which contains caffeine? Do you drink herbal teas? If you prohibit hot drinks would cold herbal tea be acceptable.
I’m just asking because I try not to offend anybody by giving them anything that is against their religion.
And I don’t want to break my streak of no questions by asking as a separate question.

My ex-husband was Mormon, as was his whole family. The mormons do not drink alcohol, caffeine, etc. It's because they believe that you do not ingest anything that is unhealthy for you. So they also would not smoke, or things like that. They believe that "your body is a temple" and that you should take care of it.

In the "revelation" given the Joseph Smith "That inasmuch as any man drinketh wine or strong drink among you, behold it is not good, neither meet in the sight of your Father, only in assembling yourselves together to offer up your sacraments before him. "
They support this with Lev 10:8-9 "Then the LORD said to Aaron, "You and your sons are not to drink wine or other fermented drink whenever you go into the Tent of Meeting, or you will die. This is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come. " and Is 5:22 "Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine and champions at mixing drinks" and Rom 14:20b-21 "All food is clean, but it is wrong for a man to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall. "

because they believe it was a commandment of God given through their prophet Joseph Smith. You would need to study up on their religion and the additional books that were written by other prophets in other ancient places to find out more. I think there is an entire section cut out for them. It explains what the Lord's will is in there and outlines all of the blessings for abstaining from the alcohol, tea, and so forth.

We do not drink alcohol because we are not supposed to do anything to damage or disrespect our bodies, which are creations of and gifts of God. We do not drink, smoke, take drugs, and are counseled not to do body piercings or tattoos. However, the choice is always our own to make.
A lot of people besides Mormons don't drink because it's bad for you, it's expensive, damages fetuses, changes personalities, makes you lose control of yourself, causes headaches, and many people die in alcohol-related accidents. It's SMART not to drink no matter what religion you are.

I belong to the church of Jesus Christ of latter-Day saints
Pinkadot has answered the question well by quoting from the revelation to the Prophet Joseph Smith.
Evermom I think that question would be a matter for each individual to answer for them selves but Tea and Coffee are the things that were identified as hot drinks when the revelation was given in the 1830s Please see www.mormon.org for further information

I dont know about mormons but the bible warns of alcohol....
Luke 21
34And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.
35For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.
36Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.
