There are things you can do to help minimize the mood swings.
Being on a regular sleep schedule is very important for managing bipolar. I can't stress how important. In my research I have come upon that over and over again.
Eat a healthy balanced diet.
Exercise (others have made some good suggestions about specific ones.) It depends also on what you enjoy. Go for a run, if that is something you like, something that releases tension for you and requires complete focus. Do some sort of aerobic exercise, something that increases your heart rate, it will help the endorphins kick in, it is a natural antidepressant. The more calming and focus related ones are good too, like yoga, tai chi, etc.
Take medication how and when you are supposed to. Take the proper dose at the same time every day.
Practice deep breathing. Inhale to the count of 6, hold for 4, exhale slowly to the count of 8.
Do something you find pleasurable.
Avoid mood altering substances - drugs and alcohol. Using only increases your lack of control over your moods.

Exercise, this naturally increases endorphins that are responsible for the emotions. That is what my doctor tells me anyways. I also have Bipolar and Depression so exercising naturally helps me feel better and sometimes just writting about what I am feeling, how I am feeling, why I feel angry even if I don't know why, I just write. This just helps me vent.
If this fails take boxing... that will help!

Most meds are to work hand in hand with therapy and coping skills, once you have mastered taking care of your self, impulses then you should lessen, not increase your meds..if you are possibly a risk to yourself and/or others than you should stay on the highest dose a doctor recommends.

You can try doing things to keep yourself from blowing up at others or staying in bed or anything like that. Find projects to keep yourself occupied so that you aren't thinking about things so much. If you have something in your home you've been meaning to do like clean out the attic or basement, or paint a room or two, try it out and see if it helps you. The only way I can keep from having my meds adjusted when I keep going back and forth from high to low, is to keep myself entertained, busy, amused, whatever you want to call it. Also, try to do something like excercise or yoga or something physical so that you don't feel so stressed or cooped up when you have a swing. Good luck.

You can not just "improve" bipolar, you can absolutely rid your life of such. I'm speaking from experience, of myself and others I know. In the name of Jesus you can be totally free. If you are a believer, and if you are not , if you would just cry out to Him, He can and will free you from the oppression of bipolar. No kidding.
