Public state colleges, private colleges or the ivy leagues?

A transfer counselor at my community college said that I should go for a state college because of the lower cost, in case I don't get most of the tuition covered.

A financial aid worker my community college said the cheaper the school, the less money they'd be willing to offer in a financial aid package...because it would seem easier for the student to cover the costs. The financial aid worker thinks I'd be better off applying to the more $$$ schools.

Either way, I'd need some financial aid...but I'm hoping that a cheaper college's financial aid dept. wouldn't think that I should be able to cover the cost. I'm also hoping that with a more pricey college, I wouldn't end up paying out of pocket for most of the costs.

For now, I agree with the financial aid worker. I'm just nervous about the amount I'd have to come up with.

Private schools have more funding than public schools to give for scholarships and financial aid.
