Oprah is a thoughtful person. She is pobably using this "publicity stunt" to have a look at people suggestions and maybe donate some of her $1500000000 to people who really need it like people who need a house with no steps because they are in a wheelchair or help a family in drought stricken Australia or help to eradicate HIV in Africa and the world. $1000 goes a long way, recently a secrect sponsor gave me $1000 worth of books and computer software and organsied an internet plan so I can study at home and not go to the city to learn as I live five hours away from the nearest school. I am forever grateful to this anonomous sponsor as he/she has given me $1000 worth of education- a gift that I will always use forever.

Its not a publicity stunt. She does give to charity on a daily bases or do you not know about the schools she has opened in third world countries for the education of women? The idea of this "stunt" as you call it is that by giving some people a thousand dollars to do something to help another person so that the person doing the giving gets the joy of giving and understands its importants. She worked hard for all of that money. She hasn't done anything all the rest of us couldn't do if we stopped listening to the negativity in our lives and went after what we want. I applaud her for her charity and her ability to help educate others about the need for charity.
Which is more than I can say for all of you. How many of you have donated money to a cause this year for some other reason than a tax write off. Whats sad is that those bashing Oprah are probably from one of the wealther states in the union.
Im proud to be from Arkansas. We might rank 49 out of 50 on states with the most per household income but we are number 2 in the amount of money we give to charity. All of you could learn something from Oprah and the poor people of Arkansas who still some how manage to donate their time and their money to good causes where the help is needed instead of complaining about a woman whose simply trying to use her voice to get you to start thinking about doing the right thing.

First of all, it's not her money, a bank donated the gift cards (it may have been Chase, I'm not sure). Her idea is to get ALL to pay it forward. You're right, not all of us have a lot to give, she's trying to get you to be creative in how you use your money to give, if you can afford to.
My church has been doing this for year's, giving 10 individuals $100 and having them be creative in how they use it, then they share how/where they used it.
Sure, you can complain that it's for the ratings, maybe a part of it is, however, if more people with "star" power would think like her the whole world would be a better place. Let's not forget, the generousity of her (her personal cash of 10 million) AND her viewers built over 20 new houses in Mississippi where they were hit by Hurricane Katrina. Ellen Degeneres, Rosie O'Donnell, Paul Newman, Christopher Reeves, the Baldwin Brothers and too many more to mention give generously. They all give to charities/organizations they believe in; cancer research, spinal chord research, children's educations, homeless shelters; animal shelters, etc. Let's look at reality...many stars came from poor beginnings and struggled; their drive and determination made them what they are today, and many of them ARE grateful and give back at many charity events. It many not be your personal pocket, however, one day you may need the services of an organization they donate too. Be greatful for what you have and if you're able donate to your own cause, do so.

Interesting that many people responded to Oprah's question about giving $1000 with the idea that investing the principle and using the return for sustainable assistance would be a good idea. I believe that she, like many other wealthy people give quietly and thoughtfully. Sadly with so many in need around the world her money could be spent in one day - as the Gates Foundation knows despite their large fund. Even with the billions they are giving away it is a drop in the bucket compared to funding by international aid agencies and countries like th US. Hopefully with her question about $1000 she is challenging people at ALL income levels to think about a perhpas manageable amount of money and what that could do if placed in the hands of a person or group who really needed it. For many people that stretch gift is $1000, for others it might be $10, while for Oprah and the Gates' it is more, whatever the amount I think the message is try to find it in your heart to share a little of your wealth no matter what the amount. It feels good.

Quite simply because of the fact that not everyone has $1,500,000,000 to donate. A lot of people have $1000. Its a smaller number thats a lot more reasonable to see for donating. When its actually possible its a lot easier to see yourself donating it or actually giving it away for a good cause. So let me ask you whats holds more worth when it comes to helping the common good one person donating $1,500,000,000 or that number of people each donating a $1000. That's the way I see it, she's trying to get people motivated and thinking.

That is entirely small-minded. She's challenging people to see what can be accomplished with just a little effort and to remind us that sometimes, a little can go a really long way.
A girl from right here in Atlanta was one of the participants on Oprah's show and she got a local radio station to promote what was going on and our entire city came together with Kroger getting in on the action. The $1000 she donated to a women's shelter became multiples of that many times over through a public call to action.
Shame on you for poo-pooing the efforts of others to improve the environment around them! What have you done lately for someone else?
I could maybe understand your point if Oprah did a one-time donation of $1000, butshe did that with several hundred people and on top of that just gave $10 million to people in Africa to help the children who've been orphaned due to AIDS. She is one of the biggest philanthropists in the world and here you sit in front of your computer b*tching that SHE's not doing enough!!!
Man, shut up, get off your butt and do something.

First of all, you cannot tell someone who has worked hard for there money how to spend it. So if it bothers you that she does not donate 1,500,000,000 dollars to a charity dig into your pocket and you donate it. Then you can feel better about the donation because it came from you.

I disagree that it's a publicity stunt. She is giving. That is the point. Would YOU give your last dime out to someone with no thought of a return favor? How many of the people that responded negatively on here would give every penny they had? Very few I'm sure.
The whole point is that she is doing something. What about all the other millionaires out there that do anything with their extra money except buy bigger houses, more cars, and get other extravagant items that you know they don't HAVE to have....??? Why are you ridiculing them?
I challenge you to find out how many other multi-millionaires donate to charity on a regular basis....whether its here, Africa, or wherever. You'd be surprised how many of them prefer to keep their money as close to their pocket as possible.
Just food for thought. Have a great day.

Why doesn't she anyways. With all these money she has, Oprah can well afford anything. This $1,000.00 should only be a drop if not in a bucket, it should be on the ocean.
Not being selfish this $1,000.00, I will keep it for myself instead of giving it to a total stranger as this money will go a long way for my daughter's needs, i.e., lunch money, athletic uniforms, school supplies, new shoes, etc. adding to those mentioned above, food, roof on our heads a few bills to pay because being a single mother I have to stretch my paycheck to survive until the next paycheck. I am as needy as a any total stranger whose situation might be like myself, needing every penny that comes in hand. This money will help and instead of spending my own $1,000.00 will relieve me for the month's expenses using my own money from my pocket.

Cause she would rather profit on charity than actually help. Oprah is in it for herself and financial gains. There are countless charity advocates that don't live no where close as lavishly as Oprah. Why do you think she promotes books? Royalties. Every time you buy, she gets money. Desire for Fame and Money = Oprah
"$1000 publicity stunt" could not have been better said! It got all of us to respond!
Why don’t you tell us considering you could help over 1 million people at a thousand dollars a pop? But I'm sure you would just rather talk about it unless there is some sort of financial gain or reward for you offering help. I think that is sorry that you choose to profit on publicizing other people’s misfortunes, poverty, and ill times. It’s one thing to help, another to profit. Steve Irwin, dedicated animal lover choose to live his life promoting and educating people on wildlife. I NEVER saw him purchase a $50 MILLION DOLLAR ESTATE in sunny Santa Barbara. And that wasn't even good enough for you; you had to completely renovate it to 20,000 square feet of living area. WHO needs 20 thousand square ft? How many homeless could you help with 20,000 sq feet??? I think it is an insult that you ask this question, I wish people would look through the wool that is being pulled over their eyes to the core of you business.
