The easiest places to get approved for a credit card when you have less than average credit scores are the same places to get approved for a credit card when you have HIGHER than average credit scores.
Just ask for a SECURED credit card.

You will need to partner with businesses that don't pull your credit, but report to all 3 credit bureaus. That will give you more positive trade lines (TLs) which will drastically improve your score. For example, research Crown Jewelers on the internet. They will give anyone a $1,500 credit line with no credit check, as long as they purchase a small item. And they report to all 3 CBs. Also, try using your debit card at Target. Sometimes they will pre-approve you just based on your usage. It's usually a small credit limit to start out, like $200, but again no credit check and a positive TL for your credit report. After a year or two with those paid on time (and be sure to keep the balances low) you can go for a real card. Sometimes Target will promote you to a Target Visa automatically. You generally need to be in the 600s to get a real credit card and this will get you there.

You should start with a secured credit card. This requires a small deposit into a savings account which is held as security for your credti card. After about 6 months of making timely payments of more than the minimum due you will have other credit offers.
Here is some additional info. Hope this helps.

Anyone can get approved for any credit card, the thing is how much are you willing to pay. with poor credit getting a card usually means a low spendning limit, very high APR and usually a yearly, sometimes monthly fee for the card. Just type credit cards for poor credit in the yahoo box, you will find one.

Your secured credit card is a start. It takes 10 years for your old bad credit references to clear off your record from the time they are PAID OFF.
