It's whoever spends the most time with the child.
Previously, men would work and the women would stay at home with the children and so the children would grow more attached to thier mothers. Because of this it's easy to see where the gender preference myth came from.
These days, mothers are now working just as hard as fathers and so the children become more attached to a surrogate parent...such as a grandparent or nanny.
In short, it is a myth. The child 'likes' whoever it spends the most time with.

I think that each child is going to be different. I have three younger brothers (I was the only girl), but the oldest and youngest favored mom, and the middle favored dad.
I'm a working mother, married to a stay-at-home father. Our 2-year-old I would say is generally a daddy's girl. When I arrive home after work, I get greeted with this excited little girl, running up to me and giving me hugs & kisses. And, for a good hour or so, it's "C'mon mommy....look" while she shows me her toys, drawings, and such. After that, it's back to cuddling with daddy. When she's hurt or scared, she wants daddy. Daddy can't leave the house without her crying at the door; but he's the one who's with her all day. I think that because she is just used to me working, and leaving home without her every day, that she has come to accept it.

I think it's just a myth. All children go through phases where they prefer one parent over the other. All three of my boys did it with my husband and I. They still do it actually. I stay home with them so I do most of the disciplining, so when my husband gets home, they want only him because he will wrestle rough w/ them and let them get away with some stuff. But on the other hand, I'm the one who gets to kiss all the boo-boos and get all the hugs after wards. So it evens out=)
