I have a 7 month old rat terrier and live in a cold climate. I have a yard for him but the weather is so cold I don't want to leave him outside in it all day while I am at work (about 7 hours). Also, he is chewing so I can't leave him in the house all day alone. Will he do OK in the kennel (7x7) in the garage or should I just leave him out in the yard all day?

He should be fine in the kennel in the garage if he's got a good supply of fresh water, and some bedding to lay on, if the garage isn't heated. Buy an old comforter at Goodwill and give that to him as a blanket in the kennel.

Definitely don't leave him out in the cold. Even with some shelter it can be dangerous for a short haired small breed dog. Have you tried a Kennel Cab indoors? He will eventually outgrow the chewing with plenty of chew toys and training. Then you will be able to leave him out when you go to work.

Crating a dog is a great thing to do. As long as you never use the crate for punishment he will like it. When you put him in there before you leave put a treat and a toy in there with him (not a toy he can possibly destroy and swallow. Kongs are great!) When you come home take him outside to go bathroom and then bring him back in and play with him. He will know that you still love him.
