On 60 minutes there was a discussion about whether this pill should be used or not. If one had a rape that caused them great stress and pain, would this pill be applicable or should they simply learn to cope with their traumas naturally?

The 60 minutes show you were refering to talked about the use of the chemical propranolol. Propranolol's normal use is is that of; a beta-blocker, antihypertensive, antianginal, and an antiarrhythmatic. I believe this medicine should not be used off-label for "memory erasion." I dont even believe in that anyways. There are 1000's of other chemicals that could be used in the situation of a post-traumatic event. MDMA, methylene dioxy-methylamphetamine showed great promise back in the 80's of alleviating these post-traumatic memories and stressors. The government thinks differently though, and it is now a schedule 1 substance. I personally think that an anti-hypertensive should not be given to a person with potentially no hypertension, in some hope that it will block memories.

Depends on the memory. They can be painful at times but generally it's an experience where a lesson is learned.

However, if it was from being a victim of a crime, such as a rape, I might consider it.

No, people need to solve these kinds of problems on their own. You have a memory that makes you feel sad then deal with it naturally without any meds. At least that is what I would tell myself. I like it when people take responsibility for themselves, when people manage and take care of themselves instead of having to rely on meds, the government and other people ALL the time. It's okay to do that put only up to a point.

I think that part of what makes us what we are is our memories, and if we take them away, we can forget some of the valueable lessons we've learned, no matter how traumatic the situation we've endured.

I would not take a pill

I'd let other people test it for about 10 years, then see if it's really safe.
