That is so cute! Thanks for sharing. Makes me want to go out and adopt a dog. Is he a labrador or golden retriever? I know those dogs love cuddle toys.

Ah - so sweet. Definately a comfort thing. We have a rescue dog (had him from 10 weeks & he's now 1 year). His mum died in pup birth & he was bottle fed so he has a "sucky triangle" that he only uses at night & will hold it carefully between his paws & suck away looking very contented. My husband calls it his "furry tit"! I had to buy a second one so that he has one to use & one in the wash as it gets full of dog goo. I imagine he's going to do this for life but I don't mind. You might need to back up with a spare Ted for when this one gets sucked to death.

Maybe its a comfort thing. Perhaps he feels safe by sucking the teddy, just like children do with their thumbs or by hugging a soft toy.

It sounds pretty cool, a good conversation starter, a good talking point, and a unique feature of your pet that you can always be proud of :)

My 3 year old Bullmastiff does the same thing with a soft rugby ball I think it's like a comforter. He sucks it really loud with his eyes closed and then goes to sleep cute no he's 10 stone with bad breath.

First ask your friend if the dog has done this for its whole life.
If he has:

Dogs are pack animals, and very social. They need to become somewhat emotionally attached to their family, whether human or canine.
When puppies are taken from their mothers, and are not allowed to bond with their owner, or are shuffled from owner to owner, they are traumatized and can become insecure.

The behavior your dog displays is that of a puppy who wants to nurse for emotional comfort, maybe because he left mum too early in life.

My Girlfriend has a Pomeranian that does the same thing. Her theory (My girlfriends, not the dog) is that she (the dog, not the girlfriend) was weened at too early of an age. The dog likes a particular stuffed toy to do this to.

One of my dogs does this too, except he likes to suck on a blanket. He will not go to sleet unless he does this. It's almost like a baby. I've had him for 5 years and he does this everynight.
Also, he does this throughout the day as he naps.
My family and I are used to it. it's just a weird habit, I guess.

my cocker does the same with a little pink teddy she has got, she likes to carry it around with her and places it wear she sleeps. We thought it was strange at first because it was the only thing she would not chew. It is definitely a comfort factor an my friend told me they do that when they feel broody. Maybe Males can feel broody. Whatever it is, it is ssssooooo cute!!!
