A ring on the ring finger of the left hand usually means the woman is engaged or married.
Sometimes, younger, unmarried women will wear a ring here just for fun, but if you examine the ring you will usually be able to tell that it is not a wedding ring. Wedding/Engagement rings tend to be fancier and higher quality, and can range from a plain gold or silver band to a whopping diamond flanked by colored gemstones.
If she is wearing a ring just for fun, it is usually of a lesser quality and bears an interesting design. Most rings are sized for the average ring finger, so perhaps she only wears it there because it does not fit any other finger.

It used to mean she was engaged. Now some women just wear rings on that finger. Most of the time you can tell by the type of ring if it is an engagement ring or not.
