I've lived here most of my life, and the few times I left the state were the happiest. I am so sick and tired of the insanely high cost of housing, the massive traffic jams, the 14 million people crowding everywhere, having it take 90 minutes to drive 20 miles, the gigantic freeway systems. We'll move when it's time to retire, but I'm seriously afraid I will go mental if I have to stay here another 20 years! How do I deal with this? (It's impossible to find peace because the beaches, mountains, and parks are so dang crowded!)

I was thinking Oregon. I'm sooo going mental. Our condo complex has about 200 cars coming and going a mere 2 feet from our windows. Our newest neighbors - I don't know wtf they're doing, but our bedroom/their kitchen share a wall and every night at 1am and again at 6:30am they do god knows what and it literally shakes the walls. I haven't slept in months. I'm starting to hate going out of the house. This morning I did go mental and kicked a hole in the wall because their banging around drove me insane (they don't speak English and refuse to answer the door.)
I don't like the person I'm becoming (either crying or raging) I gotta get out of here, but since I can't, I don't know how to cope.
Thanks.

I left So. Cal when I was 20 yrs. old and have been in the SF bay area ever since. Now, I'd like to go somewhere else, because it's crowded here to and way too expensive. Oregon is nice and much cheaper cost of living. Why don't you think of moving. There are websites that tell you about the best places to live, like this:

I've been to Boise, ID and I loved it. Also, Prescott, AZ is very nice! Northern Calif. is much cheaper and very pretty -Red Bluff, for instance. Happy hunting!

Try living in the San Francisco area. It's even worse than L.A.!

Yes, move to some nice, big state, that doesn't have a lot of people.

Hello Sabine. I completely understand where you are coming from. I have lived all over the US and in several other countries. My husband is from SoCal. We met in Texas, and he talked me into coming to SoCal to get married. I am still trying to learn to relax and enjoy life. ...and not "go mental". ;) I found that wine and friends really help. ;) Work and a good social life (support system) is important in staying sane.

Leaving right now is not something that we can currently do. Let me know what you discover. Good luck.
