If you're home when the mailman comes, you could throw a big handful of treats in the other direction, away from the door. If you keep doing this, he will head in that direction naturally if the treats are yummy enough. Your dog should never have the chance to be in contact with the mailman, whether you are home or not.

Put him on a leash when you know the mailman is due to show up. When he starts to show dominance, give a hard pull on the leash and a firm NO. Keep repeating this and he will learn. If he does good, tell him good boy.
It won't happen over night but it will happen. Just be consistent.
Check out the Dog Whisperer on National Geographic TV. He is awesome and deals with these problems all the time by retraining the owners to make the dogs do what they should do.

My mail lady keeps doggie treats with her and makes friends with all her patrons' pets. My dogs love her. You might suggest this to your mailman.
