I'd assume you want:
- ability to zoom in quite a bit
- image stabilisation to minimize blurry shots
- still light enough and small enough for you to be able to carry it around easily
- reasonable price

So in my view this leaves you with:
- Canon PowerShot S3 IS
- Panasonic DMC-FZ7

Both have 12x zooms, stabilised, fast operation, are light, and reasonable priced (Panasonic is cheaper).

I prefer the Pasonic's ergonomics a bit, but the Canon has a movable screen and has slightly better reviews for image quality.

Do not go for a digital SLR unless you are ready to lug the weight (a few pounds for camera plus a good zoom lens), the bulk, and have 2-3'000 dollars to spend. Of course if you have tick marks on all these then the DSLR will give you better images...

digital camera I suppose?

try the Canon Powershots 530 or 540, 6mps

or the Kodak Easyshare. it comes with 10x zoom. 6mps

both range from 150 to 200 dollars

they are the leaders of quality digital cameras! you can just put it on auto and itll do the rest for you! indoor or outdoor.

Canon Rebel XT or XTi If you dont want to spend that much, than I would reccommend the Canon S3-iS. Great cameras and have fast shutter speeds which will help capture those action shots. Also, buy the Ultra II memory card for the camera. It is 9x faster than a regular memory card. Basically, it saves the picture to the card faster so you are able to take the next picture sooner...crucial for action or sports photography

I have had a few digital cameras. I really like the Kodak Easy Share cameras. I don't know why but they seem to be a good camera. Transferring pics to the computer and printing pics with their printing dock is easy as 1, 2,3. Make sure the camera you have has the glass covering the LCD screen as not to break or puncture it. There are all different types of zooms out there. I had a smaller one that would fit in pocket and now I have a bigger one with more powerful zoom. I like the quality and zoom on the bigger one but miss being able to slip that smaller one in my back pocket to snap the fun pics of all of my out of control friends when we go places.
