You have a kidney at each side of you lower back. It is very important that they function correctly, they help remove the impurities in your body. Go to the doctor and get a test.

It could be anything really. It might be Kidney stones from not drinking enough - go to the doctor and get it checked (I'm not a doctor, so do not take my words about the Kidney seriously)

Depends on how low down it is. You need to see you doctor to get your kidneys checked. If it's not that then it is probably your sacroiliac joint, for which you would need a chiropracter.
Always - if you don't know what a persistent pain is, go to your doctor first.
